WELCOME TO ADDISON’S MATH LAB

When students step into the Addison Math Lab, my hope is that a world of exploration awaits them. Every student in our school will be given opportunities to further their understanding and develop their own mathematical thinking while in the lab. The focus of the Math Lab is for students to make sense of their mathematical thinking while they learn math concepts in many different ways. In the Lab, students will have time to approach the work from where they are in their own development and have opportunities for dialog with teachers and other students.  At Addison, we believe all children benefit from math enrichment.

In addition to the daily math instruction, math routines and math practices that take place in each classroom, the students have Math Lab with a Math Lab Teacher on a weekly basis.

In the Math Lab, Kindergarten students will work in small groups with the Math Lab Teacher and other students in Math Stations. Students work on numeracy, explore number patterns, take on measuring projects, explore the representation of numbers (both concrete modeling and symbolic writing), play math games, investigate shapes, count and count and count, and more.

First and Second grades students in the Math Lab will also work in small groups with the Math Lab Teacher and with other students in Math Stations.  Students will have opportunities to practice math through games and other activities. Math games will provide opportunities for enrichment and practice. Concrete exploration is emphasized so that solid understanding is established.

In the Third, Fourth and Fifth Grades, the students will work in small groups with the Math Lab Teacher or work at Math Stations in a small group to explore, work on applying math, or work on learning math through math games.

Dialog using math language is encouraged in in all grade levels, which promotes intellectual stimulation for all students. Throughout student work, problem solving is central. Students are encouraged to develop their strategies, their own thinking, their ability to communicate their thinking, and be able listen to others ideas. Math Lab is a welcoming and stimulating environment for all students to become better math thinkers.
